In a bold move to address literacy challenges among young learners, Godan Foundation has commenced a school outreach program aimed at improving reading skills in basic schools. The initiative, which began earlier this year, sees foundation staff visiting various schools to work directly with learners who struggle with identification of letters, words and fluent reading. Through one-on-one tutoring and group reading sessions.
According to the foundation’s representative, the outreach was inspired by growing concerns from educators and parents about declining reading proficiency levels.During the visits, learners undergo simple reading assessments to identify specific challenges such as poor phonics skills, limited vocabulary, or difficulty with comprehension. Based on the findings, tailored support plans are introduced. Age-appropriate learning materials were used to assess the learners.
Teachers have welcomed the program, describing it as timely and impactful. The headmistress Oterkpolu Primary school noted that their school lacked adequate resources and specialized literacy items for the learners.
The outreach program is expected to expand to more schools in the coming months, with the foundation aiming to reach thousands of learners by the end of the year. Godan Foundation seeks a long-term goal, not only to improve reading scores but to build confidence and instil a lifelong love for reading in the learners.
