On 20 February 2026, pupils and teachers across the Somanya Municipality joined in vibrant celebrations of Mother Tongue Day, a national event aimed at promoting the use and preservation of indigenous Ghanaian languages.
Learners from Visions Academy and Mt Cedar Schools took centre stages at the program, showcasing poetry recitals, storytelling sessions, and traditional songs in local languages. The event, held at the various schools, brought together learners, educators, and representatives from Godan Foundation and the Centre for National Culture in a colourful affirmation of Ghana’s linguistic heritage.
At Visions Academy, pupils presented dramatic interpretations of folktales in their mother tongue, drawing applause from the audience for their clarity and confidence. Meanwhile, learners from Mt Cedar Schools performed rhythmic songs and language games that highlighted the beauty and diversity of Ghana’s many native languages.
In brief remarks, organisers emphasised the importance of mother tongue proficiency in early childhood education, noting its positive impact on academic success, cultural identity, and community cohesion. Teachers from both schools reiterated their commitment to strengthening language skills among pupils through creative classroom activities year-round.
