The 2026 Ghana Reading Icon competition opened registrations on Monday morning. By Friday afternoon, we had crossed 280 participating schools — the largest cohort in the programme’s six-year history. For comparison, our first cohort in 2020 had three schools and twenty borrowed books.
What’s changed is not just scale. Cohort 6 introduces three structural improvements that the team has been preparing for almost a year. First, we’ve formalised the regional coordinator role with stipends — meaning the people doing the in-field work no longer have to volunteer their time. Second, every registered school now receives a quarterly book kit, not just an enrolment kit. Third, the scoring framework has been independently reviewed and adopted by the Ghana Education Service for Year 4 standards.
For schools, the practical effect is simple: more support, more often, with curriculum that lines up against what pupils are already being taught in class rather than sitting alongside it.
Registrations remain open through the end of the month; regional finals are scheduled for October.
